What do you think of the silent horror films like: Nosferatu, Metropolis, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and all the other ones?

Metropolis...the trouble I had finding that on DVD A very odd film, pure brilliance
Nosferatu is in a class all of it's own All copies of the later remake should be incinerated on sight But the original...mind you, with Max Schreck playing the vampire you were guarrentied that aura of surreal homicidal insanity

I was lucky enough to see a screening of Metropolis at a local theater with the electronic band Spacecraft performing thier own score for it live.  It was amazing!

Nosferatu is good, but I prefer Vampyr, though it is not quite silent... in fact I think it may be one of the first "talkies".  I like the Hunchback of Notre Dame when I saw it, but it has been a very long time.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari  is another good silent film as well as the more recent Begotten.  You may want to check those out if you haven't already.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Lon Chaney (Senior) is a classic. I know an old lady who is deeply in love with the memory of Lon Chaney, she has been in a TV documentary about silent films, talking about him. She has also exchanged letters with Lon's biographer, Michael F. Blake, and met him. He sent her signed books too.

When I saw the original Hunchback movie with her, I was impressed by how sympathetically Lon played the Hunchback. I also enjoyed clips of Phantom of the Opera.

Slightly Off Topic: I've seen the musical version of Phantom on stage in London too, it's fantastic.

I think I am way behind the times because I have never been fortunate enought to see a silent film, that I can recall in my long 28 years of age. Then again I mean I am familiar with some of them such as Nosferatu and stuff. I mean then again I recognise the names like Bela Lugosi and Vincent Price... So I guess I need to go see a silent film or something lol.

Nosferatu - great movie.

Most of the movies on vampires from that movie on sucked big time (no pun intended) and the ones involved should be shot on sight.
