Hey everyone, As all who know me know, I'm an activist. Not just for animals, but for any cause that I believe in. I got an e-mail from Care2, one of the organizations that I'm a member of that does a lot of activisim, political and charity work, and what I read made me outraged. I'm jumping on this bandwagon. Here is the contents of the e-mail: "For nearly three years Nancy W. went to extreme measures to protect herself at high school. Fearing for her safety, she stopped using the school restroom, and avoided the hallways by walking outside between classes. On an almost daily basis she was tormented at school – verbally harassed by other students who threw bottles and other objects at her, pushed her down a flight of stairs, stole her books - and on one occasion urinated in her book-bag! After repeatedly reporting these incidents to the school’s administration and being ignored, Nancy was forced to leave school in the middle of her Junior year. Nancy faced all of this because she’s a lesbian. Discrimination in the workplace can be as harmful as discrimination at school. Did you know that only 17 states and the District of Columbia have laws protecting gay and lesbian employees from discrimination, or that only nine states and the District of Columbia prohibit discrimination based on gender identity? Nancy's case brings relief and protection not only to her, it also brings hope to the many LGBT people who are facing harassment at work or school across the country. One case can change thousands of lives."  That poor girl! I'm thinking of starting a petetion to send to congress now.  Anyone who may want to sign it, please feel free to leave me a message.  I hope that none of you will ever have to face descrimination as she did.  Nameste, Jenn AKA Dragon.

"A human being is a part of the whole called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty". --Albert Einstein

Sadly, we need broader laws. NO harrassment of any type should be allowed. There are children/people who are slow, fat, thin, have more acne, come in different colors, have different home customs and lifestyles ...

When did a nation built on tolerance and freedom become so INTOLERANT???

Anyone should be allowed to study, work or take a walk down the street with a zero tolerance on harrassment law in place. No cat calls, no calling people fags, no making fun of the Amish when they ride their buggies into Pittsburgh (yes, I've seen that happen) ... etc. It's just plain wrong.

It's just not funny ... especially when it turns malicious and so deeply affects the lives of others.

I could not agree more.  When I lived in Atlanta, Ga, there was an area called 'Little Five Points' that was legally a hate free zone.  ANY form of discriminaton not only was not tolorated, but the person or persons perpetrating the crime was arrested on the charge of 'Hate Crimes'.  This included racial/sexual prefrence slurs, any physical violence or harassment of the same nature.  Think this law should be instituted everywhere.

I'm still digging up info on starting a petetion.  While I know a hard copy would be better than a net petetion, perhaps ot would be worth a try at any rate.

At the high school I went to there was a vast difference between how homosexuals were treated based on their gender. A gay male could expect possible violence  (I know it very well after fighting for some of my gay friends) whereas for the most part a gay female would only have to endure jokes or laughter. Neither form of discrimination should be acceptable although obviously the violent reaction was the more dangerous.

Also I think the 5 lil points thing could be taken drastically wrong. Im all for tolerance but if that law is as strict as you made it sound it seems almost fascist to me. Isn't intolerance just another thing we as human beings have to tolerate? We can work to improve it but it will always be there.
